Does it ever feel like you’re creating in a vacuum—working hard but struggling to find the support, feedback, or growth that truly moves you forward?

Building a creative life is tough enough on its own, but trying to do it in isolation can leave you feeling disconnected and stuck.

The power of community is often underestimated. Why?

It might be because the term has been hijacked by corporations, who use our need for belonging and connection to sell products.

It’s unfortunate because authentic, well-built communities are incredibly powerful.

Finding and engaging with fellow travelers who seek transformation and growth is one of the most effective ways to unlock one's potential personally, professionally, and creatively.

But it requires you to be a citizen of that community, not a tourist.

It requires generosity and vulnerability, not resource hoarding and top-down control.

This issue of Flux & Flow dives into some of the values of surrounding yourself with and intentionally engaging with a community of fellow citizens, sharing key resources to help you foster connections that not only fuel your work but also promote a balanced, sustainable creative life.

In this enlightening talk hosted by Jeremy Utley, Devon Young and Laura McBain explore how human-centered design can be used to leverage “bright spots” within communities to tackle complex challenges.

My takeaway: Try not to get too lost with the ‘Design Speak’. The conversation is wide ranging but one thing I loved was the focus on building on what is working as opposed to what is broken.

​Aligning Your Community with Purpose for 2025​

In this insightful session from Mighty Networks’ “People Magic Summit,” Ryder Carroll, creator of the Bullet Journal system, shares how he’s harnessed the power of community to create an educational experience that helps users improve productivity.

My takeaway: I find it amazing that such a huge community has developed surrounding such a simple productivity system. Ryder has some great perspective on journaling, reflection and productivity that are worth listening to.

​The Myth of Creative Isolation​

In this recent LinkedIn post I challenge the long-standing myth that creativity thrives in isolation. If you haven’t already connected with me on LinkedIn be sure to do so!

It’s an amazing piece of work aesthetically and conceptually. Worth your time even if you aren’t into Science Fiction or Animation.

The key takeaway from this issue is that creativity doesn’t thrive in isolation—it flourishes through community.
